Travel With Care Week to Drive Home Transportation Safety

Travel With Care Week to Drive Home Transportation Safety

The City of Auburn, Auburn University, the Auburn Police Division, and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office are partnering to launch a safety and alternative transportation awareness campaign, Travel With Care, during the week of March 19-23. The campaign encourages motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, transit riders and commuters using other forms of transportation to make safety their first priority on the road. As indicated in the campaign’s tag line, “however you go, go safely,” the importance of observing traffic laws while respecting all modes of transportation is a major emphasis of the campaign’s message.

Join Mayor Bill Ham, Jr., Auburn University V.P. for Student Affairs Dr. Ainsley Carry, Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson and Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones for a campaign kick-off on Monday, March 19 at 10:30 a.m. on the campus of Auburn University in front of Samford Hall.

AG Luther Strange reminds Alabamians to obey "Move Over" Law

AG Luther Strange reminds Alabamians to obey "Move Over" Law

Attorney General Luther Strange is joining in a public awareness effort to remind citizens about the “Move Over” law, which was enacted in 2009.

When drivers approach an emergency or law enforcement vehicle on the roadside, the law requires them to take certain safety precautions. The law “requires a driver of a motor vehicle to move over when approaching a law enforcement vehicle, an emergency vehicle, or wrecker…” Drivers are required to move to a farther lane if possible. If it is not possible for the drivers to safely change lanes, they are required to move as far as safely possible from the roadside and to slow down to 15 mph less than the posted speed limit.

“Many Alabamians may not be aware of this law, so my hope is that we can shed light on something so critical to public safety,” said Attorney General Strange. Our law enforcement officers risk their lives every day to keep roadways safe.

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - An Israel-based company says it will build a manufacturing facility in the city of Auburn in an effort to produce plastic parts for the automotive industry. Arkal Plastic Products made the announcement Tuesday and says the facility, already under construction, will be completed by the end of December.

ARKAL Automotive USA, Inc. will be housed in a new 32,000 square foot facility in Auburn Technology Park West with future expansion plans of up to 110,000 square feet. Officials say the first phase represents an investment of just over $7 million and will create 25 jobs.

"For the last two years ARKAL has collaborated in a partnership with another Auburn-based company. Business at both companies apparently is strong enough to enable both companies to expand beyond that partnership," explained Mayor Bill Ham.

LEE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - Alabama State Troopers and the Alabama Department of Transportation worked to re-route traffic Thursday morning after a tractor-trailer overturned on to a concrete barrier at mile marker 51 in the northbound lanes of I-85.

According to troopers, a crash involving a personal vehicle and a tractor-trailer occurred shortly after 10:00 a.m. on I-85 northbound at the 51 mm. The tractor-trailer overturned on to a concrete barrier. The personal vehicle was able to leave the scene however the tractor trailer is blocking the two northbound lanes of the interstate. Both lanes of I-85 North and one lane of I-85 South, near mile marker 49.4 in Lee County, were closed.

Authorities say the driver of the tractor-trailer was injured, however they could not provide information on the extent of those injuries.

New I-85 Auburn exit not ready for football season

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - The new exit under construction on Interstate 85 in Auburn won't be ready for football season.

The exit between the Wire Road and South College Street exits is scheduled for completion in fall 2012. State Transportation Department spokeswoman Rebecca Leigh White says the original completion date was July 1, 2012, but some complications came up along the way.

The new exit 50 is being built mainly for traffic headed to the Auburn Technology Park, but the road runs into Beehive and Cox roads. They will provide another way to reach the Auburn campus.

The department says the construction shouldn't cause any problems on game days because no lane closures will be in effect and no construction work will be done from noon Fridays to midnight Saturdays.

July 4th DUI roadway safety campaign to kick off

July 4th DUI roadway safety campaign to kick off

MONTGOMERY, AL  - The roadway can pose a serious problem when travelling during the 4th of July weekend. That is why The Council on Substance Abuse-NCADD, Central Alabama Law Enforcement Committee (CALEC), Alabama Department of Public Safety and Alabama Marine Police and surrounding law enforcement agencies say they will be cracking down on impaired driving June 30th - July 4th.

Statistics gathered from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over the past 25 years show that, on average, nearly half of all deadly traffic crashes over each year’s July 4th holiday involved some level of alcohol.

Alcohol impairs many of the skills that safe driving requires, including judgment, concentration, comprehension, coordination, visual acuity and reaction time.
