17th-ranked Hawks baseball comes up short at Mississippi College

The Huntingdon baseball team got off to a good start on Saturday, but Mississippi College rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Hawks 6-5.
 
It was the third straight one-run loss to the Choctaws this weekend. Huntingdon, ranked 17th by the American Baseball Coaches Association, lost 4-3 and 8-7 (11 innings) on Friday.
 
Grant Brown led off the game with a solo home run as Huntingdon (16-9) batted around and took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The lead stood until the fifth inning.
 
Mississippi College (13-15) took advantage of three Huntingdon errors to score five runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. The Choctaws went ahead 6-4 in the sixth. Huntingdon answered with one run in the seventh, but could not close the gap.
 
Brown and Joseph Odom each had two hits, a RBI and a run for the Hawks. Trey Smith and Keegan Lambeth each had two hits and one run.

Idle Warhawks fall to 7th in NAIA Top 25 poll

Unable to play last week due to rainy conditions, the Auburn Montgomery softball team dropped two spots to No. 7 in the second NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll of the season.

The Warhawks (22-1) had three Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheaders canceled last weekend, and have not played since sweeping Embry-Riddle last Monday. AUM received 499 points in this week's rankings, a one point decrease last week.

Concordia (Calif.) remained in the top spot after extending its winning streak to 25 games in a row. The Eagles received all 21 first place votes. Cal State San Marcos stayed at No. 2, while Rogers State, Lee and Williams Baptist fill out the remaining spots in the top five.

Farrar's relief work leads Warhawks to victory in series final

The No. 18 Auburn Montgomery baseball team scored 14 times, but it was sophomore Daniel Farrar’s 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief that kept the team in the game, as the Warhawks picked up a 14-8 victory over Mobile in the series finale of the three-game series between the two squads.

With the win, the Warhawks improved to 19-14 on the season and 6-9 in league play. The Rams fell to 21-10 overall and 9-6 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.

“Today our guys showed that they could be a winner if they really wanted to,” head coach Q.V. Lowe said. “Their battles at the plate were much better and Farrar did a great job of coming in and stopping the bleeding. His efforts really gave us a chance to win the ball game.”

Farrar threw 107 pitches to complete the final 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run, while striking out eight.

“I knew I needed to come in with a lot of intensity and throw a lot of strikes,” Farrar said.

Warhawks drop SSAC doubleheader to Mobile

The No. 18 Auburn Montgomery baseball team dropped the opening two games of its Southern States Athletic Conference series against the University of Mobile on Sunday, falling 5-1 in the opener and 14-3 in seven innings of the second game.

With the loss, the Warhawks fell to 18-14 on the season and 5-9 in league play. The Rams improved to 21-9 overall and 9-5 in conference games.

In the opener, Bryan Young paced the offense with two hits, including a RBI single in the second inning. The run-scoring hit gave the Warhawks a 1-0 lead against Mobile starter Ryan Hines (3-1). Hines allowed just the one run and struck out seven in five innings of work.

The Rams took control of the game with five runs in the final three innings, as a pair of AUM errors led to three unearned runs. Tied 1-1 heading to the sixth inning, Mobile took the lead for good when Ryan Parazine scored on a wild pitch.

The Huntingdon baseball team scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to win Game 1 on Saturday and two-time defending national champion Marietta took Game 2.
 
Huntingdon, ranked 20th by the American Baseball Coaches Association, won the first game 6-5. Marietta, ranked sixth by the ABCA and fourth by D3baseball.com, won the second game 9-2
 
The loss in Game 2 snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Hawks. During that stretch, Huntingdon (16-6) picked up four wins against nationally ranked opponents.
 
In Game 1 on Saturday, the Hawks trailed 5-4 entering the ninth. A Tyler Blackwell single scored Trey Smith to tie the game and Austin White singled in Blackwell for the game-winning run.
 
White finished the game 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run and Blackwell was 2-for-5 with a RBI and two runs.

AUM baseball announces changes to weekend SSAC series against Mobile

Due to the potential threat of inclement weather in the Montgomery area, the Auburn Montgomery baseball team has announced a change in the schedule for its weekend Southern States Athletic Conference series against the University of Mobile.

The Warhawks and Rams will now square off in a doubleheader on Friday, March 22, beginning at 3 p.m., rather than the originally-scheduled single game at 6 p.m. The two squads will conclude the series on Saturday with a nine-inning game, beginning at 1 p.m.

AUM enters the series with an 18-12 mark, but is just 5-7 in league play. Mobile, the winner of six consecutive games, sports a 19-9 record and is 7-5 in conference games.

AUM softball lands in top 5 for first time in program history

The Auburn Montgomery softball team jumped up three spots to No. 5 in the first NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 poll of the regular season, earning its highest ranking in the five-year history of the program.

The Warhawks had previously been as high as seventh, earning that spot in last season’s postseason rankings. AUM received 500 points in the poll, coming in 60 points behind top-ranked Concordia (Calif.). The Eagles (25-2) moved up from No. 5, receiving five first place votes.

Preseason No. 1 Cal State San Marcos leads the pack with eight first place votes. No. 3 Lee (five votes) and No. 4 Rogers State (three) also received support for the top ranking. Only 17 points separate the top four teams.

The Southern States Athletic Conference leads the nation with six teams represented in the poll. William Carey (No. 11), Brenau (No. 12), Belhaven (No. 18) and Mobile (No. 21) join the Warhawks and Lady Flames.
