AUM's Cassie Daniels earns 3rd SSAC Pitcher of the Week award

After not allowing an earned run across 17 innings, Auburn Montgomery sophomore pitcher Cassie Daniels was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday for the third time this season.

Daniels won all three of her starts over conference opponents, and she also closed out AUM’s 9-5 victory over Faulkner. She surrendered just one unearned run, striking out 31 and walking only five.

Against Southern Wesleyan on Saturday, Daniels tied a season and career-high with 12 strikeouts. It was the third time this season she has struck out at least 10 batters in a game.

The Valley Grande, Ala., native pitched a complete-game one-hitter in AUM’s five-inning 15-0 win over Faulkner, fanning eight batters with a first inning bunt single keeping her from a no-hitter.

Daniels has not allowed an earned run in 21 consecutive innings, breaking her previous career-best of 19 2/3 innings set last March.

Cassie Daniels (15-1) struck out 12 and allowed no earned runs in the opener. Taylor Powell and Kayla Hale then combined on a four-hitter in a 5-0 Game 2 win.
AUM (35-5, 12-4 SSAC) has now won eight straight games, while Southern Wesleyan dropped to 23-19 and 8-12 in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

“I thought our pitchers did a great job today,” head coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “They came out and kept us in the ballgames until we could make adjustments at the plate offensively. We’re not used to seeing a lot of off-speed pitching.

One night after dropping a 2-1 contest, the Auburn Montgomery baseball team outscored Brewton-Parker 26-5 and swept Saturday’s doubleheader at Barons Field.

“Today our guys really stepped up when they had their backs against the wall,” head coach Q.V. Lowe said. “They could have come to the park today and caved in, especially being on the road, but they showed their true toughness. I can’t say enough about the way Daniel (Farrar) came in and threw today. This is the second week that he has come in and done an outstanding job for us. We had good approaches at the plate and really hit the ball well as a team.”

The Warhawks finished the doubleheader with 26 hits, led by Branden Kelley’s five in the twin bill. Hayden Hillyer, Josh Thompson and Chad Mansmann finished with four hits each.
