Odom named ABCA All-American; pitchers Lawler and Brown named All-Region

The accolades continue for the Huntingdon baseball team.
 
Coming off a second straight 30-win season and the program’s first appearance in a NCAA Regional, three Hawks were recently recognized by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Junior catcher Joseph Odom was named second-team All-American and joined pitchers Neil Lawler and Craig Brown on the ABCA All-South Region teams.
 
Odom was named first-team All-South, Lawler was second-team All-South and Brown was third-team All-South. 
 
“All of these guys are deserving of the accolades they’ve received and each of them played a key role in our success this season,” Huntingdon head coach D.J. Conville said. “To be recognized with All-American and All-Region honors, it shows the kind of season that Odom turned in. He’s worked hard to achieve what he has. 
 
“Neil and Craig both had strong years and I’m tickled to see them recognized on the All-Region teams.

Alabama Department of Labor Obtaining Convictions for Unemployment Compensation Fraud
MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Labor Commissioner Tom Surtees announced today that the Department has successfully prosecuted several Alabamians for unemployment compensation fraud. The following individuals were charged with violating the Alabama Unemployment Compensation Law by making false statements in claims for benefits:  Sylvester Phelan, of Shorter, was tried in Macon County District Court on May 8, 2013. An investigation by Labor’s Benefit Payment Control Section determined that Phelan received a total of $1,285 in benefits to which he was not entitled. Phelan pled guilty and was sentenced to six months in jail, which was suspended. He was also fined $100 and ordered to pay court costs and restitution in the amount of benefits received illegally.   Thomas M. Allen, of Montevallo, was tried in Chilton County District Court on May 23, 2013.

Mansmann earns Honorable Mention All-American Honors

Auburn Montgomery senior second baseman Chad Mansmann was recently named an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, when the national office announced its 2013 Baseball All-America teams.

The teams were selected by the NAIA Baseball Coaches Association All-America Selection Committee. A total of 34 student-athletes were named to the first and second teams, while an additional 35 players earned honorable mention accolades.

Mansmann was a catalyst for the AUM offense, posting a .411 batting average, scoring 58 runs and stealing 39 bases, the second-best single-season total in school history. The Millbrook, Ala., native, has a team-leading 28 multi-hit games and has posted hitting streaks of 18 and 17 games. He has added 10 doubles and has been hit by 19 pitches.

On the national level, Mansmann ranked ninth in stolen bases, 13th in batting average, 20th in hits and 24th in runs scored.

Man shot in arm, Auburn PD arrests man for assault

On Saturday, May 25, 2013 the Auburn Police Division arrested Roctavius L. Todd, 24, of Auburn on warrants charging him with Discharging Firearm into Occupied Vehicle and Assault 2nd Degree.  His arrest stems from a shots fired call received on Friday (May 24) at about 10:30 p.m. in a parking lot located in the 1600 block of South College Street.  The victim, Jimmie Greene, 27, of Opelika, Alabama, drove himself to East Alabama Medical Center where he was treated and released for a gunshot wound to the arm.  The case, including the reason for the shooting, remains under investigation.  Todd was transported to the Lee County Detention Center where his bond was set at $8,000.

Opelika man charged with passing a forged check

 

On Wednesday, May 8, 2013 the Auburn Police Division arrested Marcus E. Tatum, 29, of Opelika, Alabama, on a warrant charging him with Possession of a Forged Instrument 2nd Degree.  His arrest stems from the investigation of a police report dated April 10, 2013 in which a local bank reported that two men came into the bank and passed forged checks.  Tatum was transported to the Lee County Detention Center where his bond was set at $3,000.  The other suspect, Joshua M. Strickland, 31, of Auburn, was arrested April 18, 2013 on the same charge.
