Future of AU's aviation program still up in the air

AUBURN, AL (WSFA)- As the state of Alabama rallies around another economic win in the aviation industry - the opening of General Electric's $50 million aviation factory in Auburn - just a few miles away in the same city the future of Auburn University's aviation program remains uncertain.

Despite a high level meeting Monday, the state's only four-year aviation program is now just days away from losing its accreditation.

Aviation students who are normally in the air learning how to operate an aircraft took to Samford Hall to show support for the program.

Lee County Sheriff's Office to hold "Drug Take Back" event

This Saturday April 27 from 10:00 am to 12 Noon CDST, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office will partner with the Drug Enforcement Agency in a “Drug Take Back” program to be held at Beauregard Drugs located at 7667 AL Highway 51 in the Beauregard community. This initiative provides the opportunity for the public to rid their homes of unused, unwanted and out-of-date prescription medicines. This is a free service and no questions are asked by officials participating in the effort. Last September alone, Americans turned in more than 244 tons of prescription drugs at over 2,500 sites operated by the DEA and their state and local law enforcement partners. This program addresses vital public safety and public health issues by properly disposing of medicines that otherwise might be diverted or misused. Studies have indicated that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends and many times the source is the home medicine cabinet.

Lee County's unemployment rate for March

Lee County's unemployment rate for March

Alabama Department of Labor Commissioner Tom Surtees announced today that Alabama’s preliminary March unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.2%. March 2012’s rate was also 7.2%. March’s rate represents 155,071 unemployed persons, compared to 154,790 last month, and 156,224 last year.

In Lee County, the unemployment rate for March was 5.8%, down from 6.4% in February and down from 6.2% a year ago.

“This month we continued to see the labor force grow, which tells us that more people are re-gaining confidence in the job market. We also saw the number of people with jobs grow by nearly 7,000, with only a slight increase in the number of unemployed,” said Surtees. “Even though the rate didn’t decrease, these are still positive signs.”

The civilian labor force increased in March to 2,164,497, up from 2,157,556 in February and 2,156,362 last year.
