Authorities will be looking for the "3D's" during the Holiday Blitz traffic enforcement detail | News

  The Lee County Sheriff's Office will be participating as part of the Central Alabama Law Enforcement Committee's (CALEC) state wide December Holiday Blitz traffic enforcement detail.  This traffic enforcement project will be operating starting December 15, 2012 and will continue through January 1, 2013.  This enforcement effort has been titled the 3D (Drunk-Distracted-Drowsy).  The 3D highway project will focus on attempting to identify drivers that might be on the roadway during the holiday season who are driving under the influence, distracted from the task of driving by a cell phone, and or driving a vehicle while drowsy from lack of sleep. The Lee County Sheriff's Office will be setting up various safety check points though out the county during these dates. 

Distracted driving is a behavior dangerous to drivers, passengers and non occupants alike.  Distraction is a specific type of inattention that occurs when drivers divert their attention from the driving task to focus on some other activity instead. 

    In 2010 the U.S. Department of Transportation reported that 3,092 people were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers and an estimated additional 416,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers.

     Of those people killed in distraction-affected crashes 408 occurred in crashes in which at least one of the drivers was using a cell phone (13% of fatalities in distraction-affected crashes) at the time of the crash.  Use of the cell phone includes talking/listening to a cell phone, dialing/texting a cell phone, or other cell-phone related activities.
