Teen behind bars for Opelika murder

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - An Opelika teenager is behind bars after he turned himself in for Tuesday's shooting death of 18-year-old Jamal Marcel Butler.

On October 18 the Opelika Police Department responded to calls of shots fired in the 500 block of W.E. Morton Avenue. Upon arrival officers located 18-year-old Jamal Marcel Butler behind an apartment complex suffering gunshot wounds to the upper torso. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Opelika authorities say 17-year-old Jadarius Dowdell turned himself into the Opelika Police Department Thursday morning.

Dowdell is currently being held at the Lee County Detention Facility.

TALLASSEE, AL (WSFA) - The Tallassee Police Department has confirmed that former Auburn University football player Demond Washington was arrested on Tuesday, September 27th. 

Demond Washington was charged with marijuana possession and was released on bond today.

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  An Auburn man convicted of murder received his sentence this week inside a Lee County courtroom. 

Carl Edward Vinson, Jr. was sentenced to 26 years in prison for the shooting death of 20-year-old Daniel Hall of Opelika, AL.

The murder happened last year near Bedell Avenue in Auburn.

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - The Auburn Police Division, Detective Section is seeking the public's assistance in identifying a man in connection with the attempted fraudulent use of a credit card.

Convicted sex offender arrested for rape

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - A convicted sex offender is back behind bars on additional rape allegations along with outstanding warrants.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, 50-year-old Gregory Dewayne Woodson was arrested at his address on Geneva Street in Opelika, Ala. Woodson, a convicted sex offender, was arrested on two outstanding warrants for Rape in the First Degree and Failure to Submit Notice of Transfer and Establishment of Legal Residence as a Sex Offender.

Woodson is currently being held at the Lee County Detention Facility on $106,000 bond. He is also being held on an outstanding Probation and Parole Violation warrant which is a non-bondable arrest warrant.

These charges stem from a June 8, 2011 reported rape complaint from the Beauregard Community in Lee County.

Auburn man charged in connection with several auto burglaries

The Auburn Police Division has arrested Brandon S. Morris, age 37, of Auburn, on warrants charging him with three counts of Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle and one count of Theft of Property 2nd Degree.  His arrest stems from the investigation of several auto burglaries that occurred during May 2011 in the area of Burton Street and East Magnolia Avenue.  The warrants were served on Morris at the Lee County Detention Center where he is currently being held on unrelated charges.  His bond has been set at $12,000.

Complaint filed after teen burned with lighter in youth development facility

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - The Opelika Police Department is investigating a complaint filed on behalf of a teenager who says he was burned with a cigarette lighter by an employee in the Lee County Youth Development Center.

Opelika Police say a complaint of Torture, Willful Abuse, or a Child Under 18 years of age by Responsible Person was filed on June 29.

The complaint was filed on behalf of a 15-year-old boy from Tuskegee by the Department of Human Resources. The complaint alleges that on May 16, 2011 that a 32-year-old employee of the Lee County Youth Development Center found the boy passed out in a shower. The employee believed the teen was faking a medical problem and allegedly used a cigarette lighter to burn the teen's leg.

When the teen did not respond, medical attention was summoned.
