Opelika shooting turns to homicide as 39-year-old dies | Crime
OPELIKA, AL (WSFA/WTVM) - Opelika police are investigating a fatal weekend shooting that's now being classified as a homicide.
The incident occurred around 3:10 p.m. in the 1700 block of Cherry Circle. Authorities responded to the scene where they found a man lying on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Witnesses told police they heard several gunshots and they saw a gray or silver Mercedes speeding from the area. Officers were unsuccessful in locating the vehicle.
The victim, identified as 39-year-old Opelika resident Harvey Pete Sanford, was taken to East Alabama Medical Center for treatment. He was pronounced dead around 11:35 p.m. at the hospital.
