Alabama Department of Labor Obtaining Convictions for Unemployment Compensation Fraud
MONTGOMERY – Alabama Department of Labor Commissioner Tom Surtees announced today that the Department has successfully prosecuted several Alabamians for unemployment compensation fraud. The following individuals were charged with violating the Alabama Unemployment Compensation Law by making false statements in claims for benefits:  Sylvester Phelan, of Shorter, was tried in Macon County District Court on May 8, 2013. An investigation by Labor’s Benefit Payment Control Section determined that Phelan received a total of $1,285 in benefits to which he was not entitled. Phelan pled guilty and was sentenced to six months in jail, which was suspended. He was also fined $100 and ordered to pay court costs and restitution in the amount of benefits received illegally.   Thomas M. Allen, of Montevallo, was tried in Chilton County District Court on May 23, 2013.

Man shot in arm, Auburn PD arrests man for assault

On Saturday, May 25, 2013 the Auburn Police Division arrested Roctavius L. Todd, 24, of Auburn on warrants charging him with Discharging Firearm into Occupied Vehicle and Assault 2nd Degree.  His arrest stems from a shots fired call received on Friday (May 24) at about 10:30 p.m. in a parking lot located in the 1600 block of South College Street.  The victim, Jimmie Greene, 27, of Opelika, Alabama, drove himself to East Alabama Medical Center where he was treated and released for a gunshot wound to the arm.  The case, including the reason for the shooting, remains under investigation.  Todd was transported to the Lee County Detention Center where his bond was set at $8,000.

Opelika man charged with passing a forged check

 

On Wednesday, May 8, 2013 the Auburn Police Division arrested Marcus E. Tatum, 29, of Opelika, Alabama, on a warrant charging him with Possession of a Forged Instrument 2nd Degree.  His arrest stems from the investigation of a police report dated April 10, 2013 in which a local bank reported that two men came into the bank and passed forged checks.  Tatum was transported to the Lee County Detention Center where his bond was set at $3,000.  The other suspect, Joshua M. Strickland, 31, of Auburn, was arrested April 18, 2013 on the same charge.

Phenix City man arrested on theft charge

On Monday, April 22, 2013 the Auburn Police Division arrested Deunte R. Gordon, age 21, of Phenix City, Alabama, and charged him with Theft of Property 1st Degree.  His arrest stems from the investigation of a police report dated January 16, 2013 in which the victim stated that someone stole a 2006 Nissan Altima from their used car lot located in the 1100 block of Opelika Road.  Gordon was transported to the Lee County Detention Center where his bond was set at $7,500.  The vehicle has since been recovered from a residence in Tuskegee, Alabama.

Man arrested for theft after he was identified from security video

Tuesday (04-09) just after 12 noon Central DST a homeowner in the 1700 Block of Lee Road 379 in the Salem/Bleecker community came home to find his residence had been burglarized. Property taken included a firearm and jewelry items. Working with the homeowner, investigators were able to develop a description of a suspect vehicle obtained from the victim's residential security system. This information was then provided to sheriff’s patrol deputies. Later Tuesday evening a deputy on patrol observed a vehicle fitting the description of the suspect vehicle at a residence in Smiths Station. Contact was made with an individual at the residence and further investigation resulted in the discovery of evidence linking him to the burglary reported on Lee Road 379. Sheriff’s investigators arrested Anthony Reed Eden (41) of Lee Road 430 and charged him with Burglary III and Theft II.y system. This information was then provided to sheriff's patrol deputies.

Burglary occurred in the 1400 block of Branch Street on 4/4/2013 between (2:23 AM) and (2:25 AM). Victim reported her daughter was in bed when she felt cold air moving in the room. When her daughter looked towards the window air conditioning unit she saw a black male wearing a dark hoodie standing outside the window. The daughter then saw the suspect’s hand reaching through the air conditioner shutter and window. The daughter yelled out for her mother and the suspect immediately fled. The child was not hurt during the incident and the case remains under investigation.
