Daewon America continuing to grow in Opelika

At the Opelika City Council meeting Tuesday night, Mayor Gary Fuller announced that Daewon America would be adding another $13 million in capital for equipment and hiring 32 new associates. Mayor Fuller expressed his gratitude to Daewon America for their continued growth in Opelika, “We are so pleased that Daewon is adding to their investment and bringing more employment opportunities to our citizens. When we were in South Korea last year, Councilman Joey Motley, Economic Development Director Lori Huguley and I spoke with Vice-Chairman Hur about continued investment and are pleased that Daewon’s business continues to thrive in Opelika and necessitates this additional growth.”

During the meeting the Opelika City Council passed a resolution granting approval for tax abatements for this new investment.

AMEA Scholarship applications are available

Students graduating from high school in the spring of 2012, whose households receive their electricity from an Alabama Municipal Electric Authority (AMEA) Member, could qualify for a $2,500 scholarship.  These scholarships are available to students who will be attending an Alabama college, university, technical or vocational school after graduation.

Each year the AMEA and its 11 member cities offer up to 33 scholarships, each worth $2500.  In 2011, the AMEA awarded $82,500 in scholarships to students throughout the state.

“Extending our hours during the busiest shopping season of the year is critical,” said Jason Klepper, General Manager of Village Mall. “Our goal is to be as accommodating as possible of everyone’s hectic schedules. Longer hours keep the crowds manageable, and that ensures a positive shopping experience for our customers.”

Holiday hours are posted on the entry doors of the mall and are also listed on the mall’s website, ShopVillageMall.com. Department stores, stores with exterior entrances and restaurant hours may vary.

City conducts food site cert. of Industrial Park

Lori Huguley, Director of Economic Development for the City of Opelika, announced Tuesday that the City’s Industrial Development Authority has selected the joint venture of Primus Builder’s and Garner Economics to conduct a shovel ready site analysis of the Opelika Industrial Park to attract food and beverage companies.

The Authority decided to pursue food site certification of the Park since the city wants to attract those types of companies..

There are over 28,000 companies in the U.S. alone that are defined as food and beverage process manufacturers. These companies combined employ more than 1.4 million people.

Israel-based company coming to Auburn area

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - An Israel-based company says it will build a manufacturing facility in the city of Auburn in an effort to produce plastic parts for the automotive industry. Arkal Plastic Products made the announcement Tuesday and says the facility, already under construction, will be completed by the end of December.

ARKAL Automotive USA, Inc. will be housed in a new 32,000 square foot facility in Auburn Technology Park West with future expansion plans of up to 110,000 square feet. Officials say the first phase represents an investment of just over $7 million and will create 25 jobs.

"For the last two years ARKAL has collaborated in a partnership with another Auburn-based company. Business at both companies apparently is strong enough to enable both companies to expand beyond that partnership," explained Mayor Bill Ham.

Kroger recalls ice cream over undeclared peanuts

CINCINNATI (AP) - Kroger is recalling ice cream sold in 10 states because it may contain peanuts not mentioned on the label.

The nation's largest grocery store operator says people with peanut allergies could have a serious or even life-threatening reaction if they eat the Private Selection Extreme Moose Tracks ice cream being recalled.

The recall involves only 16-ounce pints of the product with a sell-by date of June 18, 2012 and the UPC code 11110 52909.

The ice cream was sold at Kroger stores in Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, South Carolina and Tennessee, as well as the company's Jay C, Food 4 Less, Owen's, Pay Less and Scott's stores in Illinois and Indiana.
